The grant–provided through the Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development (DHCD)–is part of the Community Legacy program, one of six State Revitalization grant programs.
The DHCD Community Legacy program provides community development organizations and local governments with funding for projects aimed at strengthening communities through activities such as commercial revitalization and business retention and attraction.

This came at an ideal time as the St. Mary’s Transit System (STS) began offering fare-free rides for all passengers on July 1, 2025. The Commissioners of St. Mary’s County approved this initiative as a one-year pilot project in the FY2026 St. Mary’s County Budget.
