5 funds STS bus shelters are now in Lexington Park!

Community Legacy Award

In 2022, Governor Larry Hogan announced the State of Maryland awarded St. Mary’s Community Development Corporation (CDC) $250,000 to fund bus shelters surrounding the Lexington Park sustainable community. The grant–provided through the Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development (DHCD)–is part of the Community Legacy program, one of six State Revitalization grant programs.

Purpose

The DHCD Community Legacy program provides community development organizations and local governments with funding for projects aimed at strengthening communities through activities such as commercial revitalization and business retention and attraction.

STS Bus Shelter Locations

In collaboration with the SMC Department of Public Works and Transportation, 5 bus shelters were installed in 2025 in the following locations:

  1. MD-5 at St. Mary’s Soup Kitchen
  2. Foxchase Apartments
  3. Near Carver School Blvd
  4. Great Mills Pool - pictured here
  5. Lexington Park Library

This came at an ideal time as the St. Mary’s Transit System (STS) began offering fare-free rides for all passengers on July 1, 2025. The Commissioners of St. Mary’s County approved this initiative as a one-year pilot project in the FY2026 St. Mary’s County Budget.
